The second edition of the festival created by Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão to highlight the cultural production of quebradas Maranhão starts this Friday. The Kebrada festival takes place from December 6th to 21st , bringing together 48 artists in concerts, battles, workshops, exchange of ideas, graffiti and lots of dancing. The festival walks through the four classic elements of the Hip Hop movement (rap, dj, break and graffiti) and also makes room for derivations of street culture, especially in the field of dance, including passinho and other styles. The program was selected from among 76 proposals received by the curators invited by CCVM, who also participated in the creation of the festival in 2018: rappers MC Alcino and Costelo, producer Glauciane Pires and graffiti artist, skateboarder, producer and video director Jonas Pires . KEBRADA was born with the intention of strengthening the Hip Hop scene in Maranhão, giving space to artists, supporting the professionalization of beginners, stimulating knowledge and training, promoting the exchange of ideas and interaction with outside artists, who may come to add up. It is the biggest Hip Hop culture event in Maranhão. With this initiative, the Vale Foundation recognizes and values, once again, the artistic production of Maranhão and contributes to the creation of new spaces for sharing knowledge and coexistence. “The cultural production of the outskirts, with its enormous diversity, is certainly the most powerful and instigating thing currently taking place in Brazilian culture. Hip Hop, and its derivations, is special within this context, as it is an aggregating and transforming movement. In Maranhão, the scene is strong and needed space and greater visibility to develop. KEBRADA was created for this purpose and it has already borne fruit”, highlights Paula Porta, CCVM curator. Over three weeks, always on Fridays and Saturdays, there will be seven workshops, four battles with prizes (rhyme, passinho, all style and break), a dance show with presentations by seven groups, two exchanges of ideas with visiting artists, graffiti bringing together six artists and three great shows on the 7th, 14th and 21st. The invitation to artists from abroad is intended to promote exchange, they arrive bringing references and leave getting to know better what is done in Maranhão. This year the artists chosen by the curators form a trio of weight. DJ Erick Jay (SP) is winner of the two biggest championships in the world and considered the best DJ in Latin America; rapper Thiago Elniño (RJ), who stands out with a sound based on music and black references and is releasing his second album, and rapper Rincon Sapiência (SP), one of the most instigating and requested artists in the current scene. In addition to their presentations, guests will also participate in an exchange of ideas with local artists. Erick Jay will also give a very special workshop in the second week of the festival. “Black music in Brazil is the one that has fostered the most content. Rap, samba, pagode, funk, other languages of black music, such as bregafunk, are still active in their entirety. Therefore, nothing is fairer. the black body and black music are on the stages of festivals throughout Brazil. This has happened and I think it could happen with an even greater volume”, comments Rincon Sapiência, who is coming to Maranhão for the first time. The event’s curators highlight the Festival’s importance, both for the local scene and at the national level. “For me it is very gratifying to participate in this curatorship of the Kebrada Festival, which is certainly not only the most important in the state, but is currently one of the most important festivals in Brazil, since in other states there has not been so much festival involving the whole the Hip Hop culture. Kebrada arrived at a time when we needed to strengthen the Hip Hop culture, not only here, but in Brazil. Show the true meaning, awareness, exchange of ideas, the form of expression”, evaluates Jonas Pires. One of the pioneers of Hip Hop culture in Maranhão, MC Alcino, invites everyone to another edition of the festival. “I usually say that the Kebrada Festival will go down in local and national history. I feel honored to be able to help build this event. I want to invite everyone, who will be beautiful”. MC Costelo adds the role of valuing the artists from Maranhão that the Festival plays. “What’s new this year is that we opened for artists to enroll and we had very good quality material. We’re going to have a lot of new people, people from the countryside, from Rosário, from Chapadinha. We are bringing in these artists encompassing the local scene as a whole. It is a showcase for this new generation, for the entire Hip Hop culture, which gets stronger with each event, whose target audience is the periphery”. A resident of the city of Chapadinha, rapper MC Carlim from Piauí had already heard about the Festival on social networks and was encouraged to sign up by friends. “I did a little research and saw that it is a highly organized, professional and responsible event. So my expectations are the best, I’m anxious. I feel flattered to participate!”, he considers. For the young CFN members, this is a chance to share what they think through their art. “Our participation is important to show that young people from the periphery are able to express themselves and talk about what they see and experience”, he summarizes. Singer and rapper Enme Paixão, who has just won a newcomer contest in São Paulo, where she released KEBRADA, will give a workshop on independent production and its challenges and will perform at the Mostra Dança Aqui, which will take place during the Festival . She highlights the incentive that the event gives to Hip Hop culture. “Kebrada comes precisely to encourage art, artists from the periphery. CCVM has always supported the development of our projects. In the workshop I want to share a little of my experience, so that other peripheral artists, LGBTQ’s, who are in the scene, can also structure themselves and have the same accesses that we are having. It is exactly this door that Kebrada is opening: we produce and help people to produce.” Consider. All festival activities are free. Registration for the workshops is now open and can be made by email (contato@ccv-ma.org.br) or by telephone (3232 6363).
