I Piranhão Film Festival takes place in São Luís and Teresina in a hybrid format

11 to 14 January 2023

Seeking to promote the dissemination of independent audiovisual and cinematographic productions on the borders between Piauí and Maranhão, the 1st Piranhão Cinema Festival will take place from January 11 to 14, 2023 in a hybrid format (in-person and virtual) and simultaneously in São Luís (MA) and Teresina (PI). In its first edition, the Mostra’s starting points are the axes of memory, identity, and decoloniality, seeking to reflect and question the physical means and hegemonic spaces for maintaining memory, strengthening and affirming identity perspectives in works and discussions that guide orality.

The project, approved by the Ocupa CCVM Audiovisual notice at the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center, will comprise productions from Maranhão and Piauí, chats between directors, workshops and analysis of the films by critics from the local scene. The program was based on an open public call between November and December 2022, which received 140 submissions from directors from both states.

The name of the event refers to the definition given to the populations that inhabit the Mesopotamian region between the Parnaíba and Poti rivers, borders between Piauí and Maranhão (PI-Ranhão), and the Mostra proposes a strengthening of audiovisual and cinematographic culture in both states.

The screenings will take place starting at 1:30pm at the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center, located on Rua Direita, 149, Centro Histórico. In Teresina (PI), they will take place at Sala Torquato Neto, at Clube dos Diários, Centro. The films selected in the call will be available for 10 days on the Mostra website and on the CCVM YouTube channel.

The 1st Piranhão Cinema Show is organized by the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center (CCVM) and the producer LABCINE Filmes, with support from ASSAAC (Friends of Art and Culture Association of Piauí) and the Ubíqua Institute, Journalism and Communication Research Center (NUJOC) and the Academic Center for Social Communication.
