Dança em Trânsito Festival presents free contemporary dance shows in Maranhão

One of the largest and most comprehensive international contemporary dance festivals in the country. This is the Dance in Traffic Festival, which in its 21st edition continues to offer the public free shows with national and international dance companies, in addition to training activities such as artistic residencies and one-off workshops.

In Maranhão, the performance phase of the dance shows will take place from August 21 to 25, in Pindaré-Mirim, Itapecuru-Mirim and São Luís. It will be a week of activities including workshops.

According to Giselle Tápias, one of the artistic directors and curators of the festival, bringing the festival to Maranhão is a source of happiness and an opportunity to stimulate every time the public contemplates and is interested in contemporary dance.

“It’s always a joy to return to Maranhão, to see that more and more of the public embraces our project, comes to watch the shows and also actively participates in the workshops. So we make a point of coming here and always bringing a diverse program, in addition to also contemplating local culture and talent,” she said.

What’s new this year is that the program will include a show with a cast from Maranhão and choreography based on the artistic residency held in São Luís in July. With the title Gereba, inspired by the name of the red-headed vulture very common in Maranhão, the show features elements of the Creole drum and the bumba-meu-boi, inserted from the studies of the choreographer Márcio Cunha, together with the artists Ana Regina Arcanjo, Dante Silva, Calina Rubem, Robson Serra, Mestre Barrabás, Rodrigo Almeida, Kayodê Belfort and Larianne Freitas.

The choreography was released in Rio de Janeiro on August 6th and will now be seen for the first time in Maranhão, on August 21st, in Pindaré-Mirim, followed by Itapecuru-Mirim and São Luís.

Shows in Maranhão

The program in Maranhão begins on August 21st in Pindaré-Mirim. Starting at 16:00, at Engenho Central, there will be presentations of Creme do Céu by Grupo Tápias; Gereba, a choreography created by the artist Márcio Cunha during his artistic residency with a cast of artists from Maranhão; and Boca do Mundo, by Cia Márcio Cunha Contemporary Dance.

On August 22nd, the Dance in Traffic Festival comes to Itapecuru-Mirim. The performances of the shows will be held starting at 18:30 at Praça Gomes de Sousa. The program also presents the shows Creme do Céu, Gereba and Boca do Mundo, as well as the Crioula Flores do Maranhão Drum, an expression of the municipality’s popular culture.

In São Luís, Dança em Trânsito presents dance shows on August 24th and 25th. On the 24th, there will be three performances at the Arthur Azevedo Theater: at 15:00, Creme do Céu, by Grupo Tápias; and at 20:00, the shows by the South Korean dance company Company SIGA, followed by Study Number 1, by Renato Vieira Cia de Dança.

At the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center, the shows Entre Rios, by the duo MaVi, will be presented at 18:00 and Formigueiro, by the choreographer Bruno Duarte, at 18:30.

On the last day of Dance in Traffic in Maranhão, the performances begin at 18:00 at Praça Nauro Machado, with the choreography Em Boa Companhia, by the dancers Guilherme Gomes and Helena Heyze; followed by Gereba, a choreography created by the artist Márcio Cunha during an artistic residency with a cast of artists from Maranhão; and Boca do Mundo, by Márcio Cunha Contemporary Dance.

The program continues at the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center, at 19:00, with the presentation of the shows On ne Se Connait Pas Encore, Mais, by Grupo Tápias, and the show Triz, by Bruno Cezário, closes the program.

Dance in Traffic Festival

In its 21st edition, Dança em Trânsito, one of the largest and most comprehensive international contemporary dance festivals in the country, grew even more.

With the production and production of Espaço Tápias and artistic direction and curatorship by Giselle Tápias and Flávia Tápias, he has accumulated superlative numbers since 2002, with more than a thousand performances in cities in Brazil and abroad, involving a hundred companies from 16 countries, seen by more than 60,000 people.

The 21st Dance in Traffic is presented by the Ministry of Culture, through the Cultural Incentive Act, and is sponsored by the Vale Cultural Institute and sponsored by Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus and Engie Brasil Energia.
