MUMBI Show — Black Women in Audiovisual

10 to 11 March 2022 to 18:30

During the International Women’s Day Week, the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center hosts in its Open Patio program the first edition of the MUMBI Show — Black Women in Audiovisual. On March 10 and 11, Maranhão and national films produced and directed by black women will be screened, followed by chats with directors and artists

Curated by producer Helen Maria da Manguezá Produções, the show was created to highlight the achievements of black women in the audiovisual sector, meeting the predominance of males and whites in the sector.

The exhibition is named after Adélia Sampaio, since Mumbi, in Kikuyu (Kenyan), means “Women’s First”, and the filmmaker is the first black woman to direct a feature film in Brazil.

In 2019, the Multidisciplinary Affirmative Action Study Group (GEMAA) updated the database of reports on gender and race in the 100 films of the Brazilian audiovisual wide audience. It was noted the underrepresentation of the black and brown population and revealed that 98% of the films with a large audience were directed by men. Among the alarming 2% of women in management, the report draws attention to the fact that none of them are black.

Helen Maria, producer and curator of the show, reiterates that “Although 80% of the Maranhão population is black, this is only the second black cinema exhibition held in the state and the first with a cross-section of race and gender. The performance of this show is more than a joy, it is a cry of existence and resistance, to say: We exist, we are directing and producing, and we will change the statistics soon.”

In the program we will have the screening of 07 short films between Maranhão and Brazilian citizens, divided into 02 days with the themes: “Music and Dance in Popular Culture” and “Me, Black Woman, the protagonist of my story”. At the end of each exhibition, conversations will be held with producers, screenwriters and black historians from Maranhão.
