23 February 2024 to 19:00
Free Schedule

The rhythmic diversity of popular culture in Maranhão is the leitmotif of the documentary Tambores do Maranhão, by São Paulo filmmaker Paulo Cesar Soares. The film project began in 1996, based on research on cultural manifestations in the state, when interviews were conducted with cultural teachers, historians, folklorists, researchers, players, players, composers, religious leaders and other characters from the rich musical tradition of Maranhão.

Dances and sounds such as the Bumba Meu Boi, the Crioula Drum, the Congo, the Mangaba, the Lelê, among others, have been recorded highlighting the most significant traits of these customs and how they influence the routine of the communities where they originated. The documentary will be screened at the CCVM on February 23 at 19:00 with the presence of director Paulo Cesar Soares.

At the time, the Drums do Maranhão/Paulo Cesar Soares Collection will also be launched, consisting of the original recordings made for the documentary. There are 67 records of presentations of popular expressions, in addition to interviews with teachers, and Afro-religious leaders of the culture of Maranhão, such as Apolônio Melônio (photo), Humberto de Maracanã, Mestre Felipe, Dona Teté, Father Euclides and others.

The program is free and starts at 19:00. The CCVM is located at Rua Direita, 149, São Luís Historic Center.
