Mestra Roxa has circulated around Brazil as a cashier and as a sheepdog in performances, conversation circles and workshops, always singing the song of the Divine, Carimbó, Cacuriá, Creoula drum and coconut.
The show Toques, Cantos e Enchantos carries the strength of this black woman, of quilombola origin, who has been representing Maranhão over the years and bringing the best we have to the world. At the last Open Patio in October, we will receive the ancient touch of Mestra Roxa here.
About Mestra Roxa
A native of Quilombo de Santa Rosa dos Pretos, located in the municipality of Itapecuru-Mirim (MA), Maria da Graça Motta Belfort learned the Divino box ring at the age of 6, accompanying her mother to the festivities. In her youth she moved to São Luís, where she remained close to her traditions and became known as Mestra Roxa. Her powerful role as caretaker of all this ancient cultural wealth resulted in the award of Master of Popular Culture, which she received from the State Government, Ministry of Culture and IPHAN.
