A meeting of artists to honor the black culture of Maranhão

19 January 2023 to 19:00

Conceived by percussionist and cultural producer Kadu Galvão, the CCVM hosts the show Afro Brazil at its Open Patio on Thursday, 19, at 19:00. The presentation brings together artists Paulinho Akomabu, Célia Sampaio and Tadeu de Obatalá and pays homage to the great black artists from Maranhão.

The show has the strong beat of Afro-Brazilian rhythms such as Afoxé, Maculelê, Congo de Ouro, samba de Roda and Creole drum; and includes Afro-Brazilian songs that shaped the Maranhão Carnival, such as Mermaid, Akomabu Come, Rainha Negra and Luta de Negro, among other songs.

The project emerged from the former show Canto Afro do Maranhão in 1995 with Escrete, Paulinho Akomabu and Tadeu de Obatalá. Starting in 1999, the show became part of the program of the State and Municipal Carnival Circuit, also participating in events at the Black Culture Center and the Akomabu Block. After the death of Escrete in 2007, his friends continued performing this show during the Folia de Momo.

Admission is free. The CCVM is located at Rua Direita, 149, Centro Histórico.
