Open Conversation with the poet Carlos de Assumpção will take place on the next 30th (Wednesday) , at 7pm . Poet, professor and lawyer, Carlos de Assumpção was born in Tietê (SP) 92 years ago. His grandfather Cirilo, benefited by the Free Womb Law, used to tell him his memories and testimonies of slavery. His father was a great storyteller and his mother, a lover of poetry, rehearsed with the children of the 13 de Maio Beneficent Society . Both were part of the Brazilian Black Front . He himself is a tireless activist, as a teacher, writer and poet. It released five books. In the words of Alberto Pucheu, professor of Literary Theory at UFRJ, “the poet created a powerful work about black resistance in the country, at a level whose poems are equal to the most significant works of Castro Alves, Drummond and João Cabral. With one difference, however, decisive: that of poetizing our history based on the testimony of black people, of a personal, historical and political self at the same time”. The impact, caused by the poetic work he was unaware of, led the professor to make the film that bears the title of the author's most celebrated poem, Protesto , written in 1956. “How, if not through racism, can a poet of Carlos de Assumpção's stature be able to be almost entirely unknown to other poets, critics, journalists, intellectuals and readers in general?”, asks Pucheu. This reality may start to change because soon, finally, Carlos de Assumpção will have his work released by a major publisher. The conversation with the poet will be preceded by the screening of the film Carlos de Assumpção: Protest (2019) and will feature the participation of Professor Pucheu. A unique figure that we are honored to receive and share.
