Maranhão by Pierre Verger was on display at the CCVM from March 16, 2021 to March 19, 2022. Initially exhibited virtually, its doors were opened to the public with the reopening of the CCVM in October 2021.
Curated by historian Paula Porta, the exhibition brought the eyes of the French photographer, ethnologist, anthropologist and researcher Pierre Edouard Léopold Verger (1902 – 1996) on 80 photographs taken during the trip to Maranhão.
In line with her numerous works, the images displayed marked the presence of black culture in a daily life of resistance, expanding the understanding of religiosity, work, philosophy and so many other aspects that formed our culture, the heritage of the Black Atlantic.
The exhibition was signed by architects Claudia Afonso and Gabriel Gutierrez, who used fabrics dyed with red mangrove shells as exhibitors, in an allusion to the sails of the traditional vessels used by fishermen in our state. The production of the fabrics was carried out by the Estaleiro Escola do Maranhão.
