Workshop inspired by the Sulanca movement proposes a new perspective on clothing

07 to 11 February 2023

Originated in Pernambuco, in the city of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, between the 60s and 70s, the term sulanca is a popular expression that refers to the garments created in the municipality. Today, it names low-cost markets, fairs, and clothing stores that drive the economy of some states in the Northeast. Sulanca calls an aesthetic, a way of doing and relating, creating propositions and exchanges based on popular culture.

Inspired by this movement, the workshop “Sulanca Por Nós” proposes a manufacturing experience inspired by the experience of each participant with the textile universe. Based on the stitched stories, pillow covers will be made with detachable zippers, allowing for a modular piece with numerous variations.

The workshop will be led by fashion designer and sulanca specialist Jorge Feitosa, born in the rugged Pernambuco region. From the age of six, she had been building her games on the sewing machine. This was the starting point of all his research on creation, materials and processes, fundamental elements in the materialization of the stories told by him, which always take on mythical, regional and folkloric tones. All of its production is carried out with thought and action directed by sustainability in the process and in relations, redefining what was ruled out by the passage of trends and consumerism.

Registrations can be made in person at the CCVM on the first day of class. There are 20 vacancies. Participants who want to bring scraps, leftover fabrics, used pieces of clothing that can be used to create the pieces during the workshop can feel free.
