Opening of “Liça Pataxoop: My writing is the drawing” will take place next Tuesday (22)

Ministry of Culture, Vale, Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão and Automatica present “Liça Pataxoop: My Writing Is Drawing”, the first exhibition by the artist, educator and indigenous leader Pataxoop.

The exhibition brings together about 80 drawings made by Liça and young people from the Muã Mimatxi village, in Itapecerica (MG), as well as videos and an immersive installation. The works, called by Liça Têhêys of Knowledge Fishing, are drawings that function as a form of writing and record knowledge, memories, stories, and relations of the Pataxoop people with their territory.

The word têhêy originally refers to a fishing instrument made by Pataxoop women and children with tucum and vines. In Liça’s work, the term gains new meaning: it becomes a tool for “fishing” knowledge from life and transmitting, through images, teachings between generations.

The opening night takes place on September 22 (Tuesday) at 19:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and our programming is free!
