Vale Maranhão Cultural Center announces those selected for the 2020 Open Patio

23 June 2020

The Pátio Aberto 2020 public notice included 66 artists, a number 50% higher than expected. There are 61 shows and presentations of popular culture, 4 theater shows and a music and poetry event. This year, 312 proposals were received. Each year the participation of artists from the interior grows, the selected artists come from 22 cities in Maranhão: São Luís, Alcântara, Anajatuba, Axixá, Bacabal, Cajapió, Cantanhede, Carutapera, Codó, Cururupu, Icatu, Lima Campos, Matinha, Paço do Lumiar, Pindaré Mirim, Rosário, Santa Rita, São João Batista, São José de Ribamar, Timon, Vargem Grande and Zé Doca. The CCVM announced that, in addition to having increased the number of winners, it will immediately pay 25% of the expected premium, to support artists in this difficult period for the sector. The format of the presentations has not yet been defined, they can be recorded, with or without the presence of an audience, at a time when it is safe for everyone involved. “We received many good proposals and the participation from the interior grew a lot, it was difficult to make the selection, but it is always a pleasure to dive into this universe, to meet so many artists, among them surprises for us like Dona Nenga Sambadeira, Dona Roxa Dorneles and Paca do Pandeiro, that deserve to be publicized. The current situation made us look for ways to support a greater number of artists and immediately, as well as to rethink the format of the presentations”, says the director and curator of CCVM, Paula Porta. Artists from various generations were selected, including icons of popular culture such as Mestre Tunico (Boi da Fé em Deus) and Zé Alberto (the Devorator Lion). The selection, as is already part of the notice, contemplates the diversity of Maranhão's culture: samba, mpb, pop, instrumental, choro, reggae and forró are very well represented. Popular culture has a strong presence with bumba boi and creole drums with very different accents, beats and characteristics. The São Gonçalo ball, the reisado, the maracatu (which resists in Pindaré), the São Benedito batuque and the lelê are other attractions from the interior. Many of the groups and artists are little known in the capital, most of them have never performed in São Luís and the Pátio Aberto opens this opportunity. The shows and presentations of the program are recorded and, in addition to being delivered to the artists, they are available on the CCVM channel on Youtube as a way to expand their dissemination. More than 70 shows from the 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions of Pátio Aberto are already available on the channel. “Our objective as a sponsor is to support and give visibility to cultural production from the Cultural Center. They are opportunities for creation and also income. Vale has been investing in Culture in our country for two decades and, at this moment, we need to unite for the cultural sector”, comments Christiana Saldanha, sponsorship manager at Vale.
