For those who missed the screenings of Negritude Atitude – The Movie, the Vale Maranhão Cultural Center will hold a new screening on Wednesday, the 7th, at 19:00. The film is the result of the eponymous project created and directed by historian Paula Porta, which brought together personalities from different generations and areas of activity to discuss current events, meanings, and relevance of the concept of blackness.
In all, eleven interviews were conducted with names such as Conceição Evaristo, Walter Firmo, Rincon Sapiência, among others. “Our expectation is that the videos will contribute to strengthening and instigating young people. May they reach those who will soon be faced with this dysfunctional society, in which the majority of the population is mistreated and is subject to violence of all kinds because of their physical characteristics. It is necessary to know more about the experiences, trajectories, thoughts, and productions of the black population to understand how much racism hinders us and causes us to waste talent and creative energy. As the 92-year-old poet Carlos de Assumpção, one of our interviewees, says, until the issue of equality is resolved, the country will continue skating without leaving the place”, highlights Paula.
The documentary is also directed by Jonas Pires, who is responsible for photography. “It’s a very important project for our people. 76% of the Maranhão population is black! We know how hard we have to fight to get somewhere. Coping, education, and awareness are necessary to move forward. The road is long and there are still some paddling against theirs. Audiovisual media can go a long way and is a powerful tool against oppression and inequality,” says Jonas.
Admission is free. The CCVM is located at Rua Direita, 149, Centro Histórico.
