Diversity of popular culture in Maranhão with Coco Katolé

01 February 2024 to 19:00

The Coco Katolé New Generation dance was founded by Mestre Biné 32 years ago in Povoado Arrebenta, a quilombola territory located in the municipality of São João Batista (MA).

The group has more than 40 members, including musicians and dancers, and has performed in several cities in the lower Maranhão region, such as Vitória do Mearim, São Vicente Ferrer and Olinda Nova. The instrumental body consists of zumbas, agogô, reco-reco, triangle and rattle.

Coco Katolé’s teachings were passed down from generation to generation and, today, it is organized by Leandro, son of Master Biné and his brothers, who aim to give greater projection to the region’s quilombola cultural production.

They are the attraction this Thursday, in the Open Courtyard! Diversity of popular culture in Maranhão free of charge for you! Come celebrate!
